Šempeter v Savinjski dolini. Šempeter is situated in the Savinjska dolina
(Savinjska valley), 11 km west from Celje. It is famous by the Roman necropolis and the Pekel cave which is located on the south edge of the karst area of Ponikve only 4 km north from Šempeter. The Settlement was important stop between the Vienna
and the Trst (Trieste) during the Middle ages.
Around the settlement are fields of the hop plants
which is important substance of the beer. At the begining of the 20th centuriy the Savinja river passed close to the settlement but now the river-bed
is about 1 km south-west away. Roman necropolis from Šempeter is one of
the most important archeological monument in Slovenia. The cementary was
covered with the rubel by Savinja river in about 166 AD. Necropolis
was excavated and brought to light during the 1952 - 1967. Today there
is an archaeological park which worth seeing.
