SLO Gozdna meja

ENG Tree line

The tree line is the edge of the habitat at which trees are capable of growing. Beyond the tree line, trees cannot tolerate the environmental conditions like too low temperatures. The tree line in Slovenia is between 1600 to 1800 m of elevation.

Larix decidua (European larch) is a species of larch native to the mountains of Central Europe. It is very cold tolerant, able to survive temperatures down to -50°C, and is among the tree line trees in the Alps reaching 2000 m altitude. It grows on well-drained soils, avoiding waterlogged ground.

Pinus mugo (mountain pine) is native to high elevation habitats. Regarding the local climate it is usually found on the elevation from 1000 – 2200 m.
