      Aquileia is a settlement along the Natisone  River, 16 km west from the outflow  of Isonzo River  into the Adriatic Sea. The old roman port, at  that time the name of river was Aquilis, is nowadays 4 km north from the lagoon and  10 km  north from the coastal town Grado. Archeological path "
      Via Sacra
      " is on the  Unesco World heritage list. 
      The Cathedral of Aquileia
       which is also on the Unesco  World heritage list is one of the most important edifices of Christianity. It  is a flat-roofed basilica erected by Patriarch Poppo in 1031 on the site of an  earlier church, and rebuilt about 1379 in theGothicstyle by Patriarch Marquad. The 750 m2 ground mosaic in the  basilica is one of the largest and most beautiful mosaics of the "West world". |  |
