Salzburg

For many people, Salzburg is most famous as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who was born here in 1756. Salzburg boasts a rich and fascinating history. In 798, Salzburg was raised to the rank of an archbishopric, developing gradually into an ecclesiastical principality, and remained an independent state until its secularisation in 1803.

In 1816, Salzburg was incorporated into the Austrian Habsburg Empire. Due to its exceptional urban fabric and architectural importance, the Historic Centre of the City of Salzburg has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.
