Rudolf Maister je bil rojen v Kamniku leta 1874 (+1934). Izobrazbo si je pridobil na vojaških šolah v tedanji
Avstroogrski državi. Konec I. svetovne vojne je pričakal kot major AO vojske. Po razpadu AO je z hitro
mobilizacijo je ustanovil Slovensko vojsko ter razorožil avstrijske oddelke
v Mariboru. S svojim odločnim nastopom je omogočil, da Maribor za kratek čas ostal slovensko
mesto. Po okupaciji slovenskega ozemlja s strani Kraljevine Srbije je bil Rudolf Maiste leta 1923 prisilno upokojen. Tedaj se je posvetil kulturnemu
delovanju in izdal pesniško zbirko Kitica mojih.
Rudolf Maister (1874-1934) was educated at various officer training
schools in Austria-Hungary. As a major at the end of World
War I, he was the commander of the regional headquarters and assumed
command of Maribor and the part of Carinthia on November 1, 1918.
With a rapid mobilization, he established a Slovenian army of four thousand
soldiers, disarmed the Austrian Schutzwehr security service, and disbanded
the army of the Austrian city council. He then occupied ethnic
territory, establishing the northern border between Austria and Slovenia which was later occupied by the Kingdom of Serbia.
A statue of
Maister stands in his native Kamnik,
one was erected in Maribor in 1987, and newer one in Ljubljana in june
1999.
