Lucca

Town Lucca is located in Tuscany, 28 km east from the Ligurian Sea. The town is known for its intact Renaissance-era city walls. Lucca was the second largest Italian city state with a republican constitution to remain independent over the centuries until the year 1805 when Lucca was taken over by French troops and later in 1847 a part of new Italian state.

The architectural sight of the town is the Cathedral of St Martin from the 11th century and partially rebuilt in the gothic style in the 14th century. Romanesque Basilica of San Frediano situated on the Piazza San Frediano is a typical Roman basilica which was built in the period from 1112 to 1147. In the 14th century the striking façade was decorated with a huge golden mosaic which represents The Ascension of Christ.

San Michele in Foro on Piazza San Michele is a roman basilica from 8th century with the present façade from the 13th century. The church was built over the former Roman forum.

Square “Piazza dell Anfiteatro” is interesting as it was built on the place of the former ancient Roman amphitheatre and it still keeps its oval shape.
