Full screen The Sao Paulo metropolis is located 760 m above the sea level, but only 72 km from the coast of Atlantic Ocean. Sao Paulo is the economical capital of Brazil and the largest city in South America. It is the capital of the captaincy (state) Sao Paulo, founded as Sao Paulo de Piratininga in 1554. The city is the eight largest in the world. In the city live 10 million population and with the metropolis area more than 17 million - which mean that Sao Paulo is actually the fourth largest city in the world. People who are locals are named Paulistas. Over 1 million residents of Sao Paulo have Japanese ancestors - so Sao Paulo is the largest 'Japanese population' city outside Japan. Sao Paulo has inhabitants from about 70 different nacionalities: over 3 million Italians, 1 million Arabics, 1 million Portuguese... e.t.c..
