The fortress of Hohenwerfen is surrounded by the Hagen and Tennen mountain ranges. It is situated at the beginning of the narrow Lueg pass. The fortress was built at the time of the investiture controversy between the pope and the king about the right to assign bishops.The citadels Hohensalzburg, Friesach and Hohenwerfen were build in 1077 to protect Gebhard, Archbishop of Salzburg from the wrath of the king.
