Between 30 and 50 crew members perished.
The Vasa remained at the bottom of the harbor for more than 330 years until she was rediscovered in 1956 by Swedish researcher Anders Franzén, who theorized that the low salinity of the Baltic Sea might have preserved the ship. Raising the ship was an exceptionally complex operation that lasted several years. Between 1959 and 1961, steel cables were guided beneath the hull, and the ship was raised gradually in several stages and moved into shallower waters. The final salvage to the surface took place in 1961, when the Vasa emerged above water for the first time in 333 years. This was followed by a prolonged conservation process that spanned several decades. Because the timber was saturated with water and iron, it had to be treated with polyethylene glycol (PEG), which gradually replaced the water in the wood and prevented disintegration. This process lasted 17 years, from 1962 to 1979, followed by additional stabilization work that continued through the 1980s and 1990s.
The costs of conservation and the museum's construction were extraordinary. Estimated at several hundred million euros, the conservation of the ship proved to be several times more expensive than her original 17th-century construction. To compare the proportions: while the construction cost roughly as much as the annual budget of the Swedish navy, the conservation cost more than the annual budget of the modern Swedish cultural sector. The Vasa thus became one of the most expensive conservation projects in history, but the result is unique: the ship is preserved with 95% of her original material, which is unparalleled on a global scale.
