Architect Jože Plečnik envisioned the construction of Vega Street as a green avenue connecting the church of Thorns to the Congress Square.
In 2009, the street was declared a cultural monument of national importance as part of Plečnik's Green Avenue.
The Green Avenue idea has been a reality for over ten years. The beginning was with the renovation of the façade of the Music School - Glasbena matica.
On the site of the former medieval wall, a raised park has been designed, leading all the way to the National and University Library and ending at the Square of the French Revolution by the monument of Simon Gregorčič.
