Tobak sadijo v vseh delih sveta - razen v arktičnih in antarktičnih območjih. Tobačno listje obirajo postopoma, tako kot dozoreva. Najbolj kakovostni so srednji listi. Tobacco is grown the world over, with the exception of the Artic and Antartic regions. The leaves are picked in stages as they ripen. The middle leaves are of the highest quality. Tobacco for cigars, consumption of which was at its peak in the 19th century, was shipped to Trst (Trieste) and then transported by rail to Ljubljana. The Ljubljana Tobacco Factory was famous for its viržinke - thin Virginia cigars manufactured by a special procedure, with a straw holder. Production was done mainly by hand until the beginning of the 20th century and ensured work for thousands of women from Ljubljana and nearby areas. Some of these cigars or "cigar ladies" were among the highest-paid and most respected of all cigar workers. Sales of tobacco products were controlled by the government. Before the First World War there were 45 tobacconist's shops in Ljubljana. Most of them lay along Dunajska Cesta (now Slovenska cesta) and Cesta Svetega Petra (now Trubarjeva cesta), but sales were highest at the shop on Kolodvorska cesta near railway station. |
