A. GOTHIC ROOM (c. 1500). The furniture in this room is very clearly still the product of simple carpentry techniques. The sides of the chest, with its special base, are not yet divided into smaller decorative panels. Only the edge is carved. The most commonly used wood in this period was pine or spruce, which meant that ornamentation could only be shallowly carved. For this reason the bottom was dark coloured so that the painted ornament would stand out better. - The individual pieces of the stained glass window were usually coloured while still at the molten stage and set in a lead border, which emphasises the outline of the image or ornament.
