Ljubljana is the heart of Slovenia, a city with a rich history, cultural heritage, and a unique urban vibe. The idea of the project City Views: Ljubljana – Open-Air Museum is based on the concept where the entire city functions as a vast museum: city streets become museum corridors, and the interiors of buildings and prominent landmarks serve as special museum exhibitions. This collection of visuals represents a valuable library and documentary overview of images of the capital, captured between 1998 and early 2002.

Fieldwork and capturing moments will actively continue in 2002 and in the years that follow. Through various visualization methods, the capital is documented in its unique temporal and spatial context – from picturesque streets and bridges over the Ljubljanica River to grand squares, green parks, and vibrant nightlife.

The architectural signature of Jože Plečnik, the lively social life in the city squares, and natural green oases such as Tivoli Park create an irreplaceable backdrop. The emerging visual archive allows for the exploration of the city's cultural and architectural heritage through interactive virtual tours, preserving the memory of Ljubljana's urban face at this turn of the millennium.

Note (July 2026)

Spatial images—specifically 360-degree panoramas projected onto a cylinder—created between the late 1990s and the beginning of the new millennium, represent an invaluable temporal record of the dawn of digital photography. They were created by stitching together images from a wide variety of equipment of that era—ranging from scanned slide films and early digital cameras with a modest resolution of 300,000 pixels, which stored photos on standard 3.5-inch floppy disks (FDD), to the first "super digital cameras" boasting what was then an astounding 3 million pixels (3 MP).

At the time, these panoramas were optimized for display on bulky CRT monitors with a resolution of 640x480 pixels, and later 800x600 pixels.

Today, as this selection of locations is revived from the archives, the resolution and composition of those panoramic photographs may seem quite modest. However, these pioneering captures must be viewed through the lens of time—as a remarkable technical achievement of their era and a precious visual monument to a space that can no longer be replicated in this form.
