Velika planina is a high mountain karst plateau in the southern part of the central part of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. The area of the plateau is 12 square km and includes pastures: Velika planina in the east, Mala planina in the south, Gojška planina and Planina Dovje in the east and Planina Konjšica in the north. The plateau with its numerous karst phenomena has a varied surface with altitudes between approximately 1400 (Šimnovec) and the highest peak Gradišče (1668 m n.v.). The plateau has peaks Bukovec (1552 m n.v.), Koritni vrh (1648 m n.v.), Dovja grič (1534 m n.v.), Poljanski rob (1570m n.v.). The central and southern area of the plateau is the pasture area, which is also the largest pasture area in highlands in Slovenia. Near the highest peak of Gradišče are natural landmarks sinkholes Mala and Velika Vetrnica. The architectural feature of the area is shepherds 'settlements with typical wooden cottages, which are now mostly decorated in holiday homes. Above the shepherd's settlement Veliki stan there is a wooden chapel of Marija Snežna (1560 m n.v.) above sea level. The roofs of these cottages are circular in shape, covered with wooden boards and extend all the way to the ground.
All mountain dwellings, including the church of St. Mary of the Snows, which was built by architect Plečnik in 1938, were burned down during the Second World War by Slovene Nazi collabolators. The church was rebuilt fifty years after its initial construction in 1988.
The plateau is easily accessible from the direction of Kamnik past Sv. Primož or by cable car from Kamniška Bistrica. On the east side there is a road leading through Gojška and Mala planina.
