Tolsti vrh is the highest point of the eastern section of the Kriška gora ridge, which stretches from the mountain hut on Kriška gora in the west toward the steep slopes above Tržič in the east. The summit is a prominent viewpoint above the Gorenjska plain and forms the natural eastern end of a 2.6‑kilometre ridge composed of grassy terraces, rocky edges, and forested transitions.

To the west, the ridge continues toward Storžič (2132 m), one of the most distinctive peaks of the central Kamnik–Savinja Alps, whose pyramidal shape dominates the landscape above Tržič and Kranj. Tolsti vrh thus stands at the meeting point between the lower, undulating ridge of Kriška gora and the higher alpine massif of Storžič.

Geographical setting

Tolsti vrh rises above:

  • the Gorenjska plain to the south,

  • the Tržič basin to the east,

  • Golnik and the Udin boršt plateau to the southwest,

  • the Tržičnica valley to the north.

From the summit, wide views open toward:

  • the south, across the Ljubljana Basin, Jelovica, and the Polhov Gradec hills,

  • the west, toward Kriška gora, Jamnik, and the Julian Alps with Triglav,

  • the north, toward Košuta and the central Karawanks,

  • the east, toward Storžič, Konjščica, and Dobrča.

Because of its position, Tolsti vrh is one of the finest viewpoints in the western Kamnik–Savinja Alps.

Geomorphology

Tolsti vrh is composed of Triassic limestones and dolomites, typical of the southern edge of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. The relief is shaped by:

  • steep grassy slopes descending toward Tržič,

  • rocky edges and steps on the northern side,

  • undulating grassy surfaces along the ridge,

  • small dolines and karstic depressions formed by limestone corrosion.

The ridge position exposes the summit to strong winds, which influences vegetation patterns: alpine grasslands dominate the summit area, while beech and spruce forests cover the lower slopes.

Access routes

1. Along the ridge from Kriška gora (most common approach)

  • Starting point: Kriška gora mountain hut.

  • The trail follows a scenic ridge with several short ascents and descents.

  • Walking time: 45–60 minutes.

  • Technically easy and suitable for most hikers.

2. From Tržič (via Lom or Gozd)

  • A steeper ascent that joins the ridge below the summit.

  • Walking time: 2–2.5 hours.

  • Suitable for hikers with good fitness.

3. From Golnik or Senično

  • A longer but scenic route through forest, joining the ridge trail.

  • Walking time: 2.5–3 hours.

4. Via Storžič (long and demanding)

  • Possible as part of a ridge traverse: Storžič – Tolsti vrh – Kriška gora.

  • Suitable only for experienced hikers.

  • Walking time: 6–8 hours for the full traverse.

Experience and significance

Tolsti vrh is popular for its:

  • excellent panoramic views,

  • easy accessibility,

  • varied ridge terrain,

  • proximity to Kriška gora, one of the most visited mountain destinations above Gorenjska.

It serves as a natural viewing platform above the Gorenjska region and a transition point between the lower pre‑alpine landscape and the higher alpine massif of Storžič.
