Bordeaux - the city and the Garonne river

Bordeaux is located near the European Atlantic coast, in the southwest of France and in the north of the Aquitaine region. The city is a port city built on a bend of the river Garonne, and is thus divided into two structural parts: the right bank to the East and the left bank in the West.

The city is the capital of the Aquitaine region, and the prefecture of the Gironde department. The administrative size of the city is comparable to Ljubljana, but it anchors a vast metropolitan area encompassing about one million inhabitants. With almost 100,000 students enrolled, the historical University of Bordeaux is highly renowned globally for its cutting-edge research in science.

Bordeaux is celebrated internationally as the absolute world's wine capital. The unique local maritime terroir fuels a historic agricultural market, famed primarily for premium red Bordeaux wine varieties, traditionally referred to as claret.
