Col settlement is situated on the altitude of 630 m at the main road Ajdovšina-Col-Črni Vrh. The original name of the settlement was Podvelb. At the road entry to the settlement use to be Castle Trillek where the tollage needed to be paid. The other name for a tollage was 'colnina', so the name for the settlement came from that word.
